STOPP, at the Sustainable Packaging Summit
Last November 12th, our partner Andromeda Scoppio, Regulatory Affairs Advisor from Plastic Recyclers Europe, presented the STOPP project with a speech at the Sustainable Packaging Summit. Andromeda, who oversees the tasks of the STOPP project that aim to enhance recycling and safe food contact recyclates by optimizing collection and sorting systems, enlighted the public with a conference entitled “Impact of Collection Practices on the Quality of Plastic Recyclates – the STOPP project “
“I was delighted to join the Sustainable Packaging Summit —an event that unites the entire value chain with a shared commitment to sustainability. At Plastics Recyclers Europe, our vision is clear: to make plastics truly circular.” States Andromeda after being asked about the event.
In her presentation, Andromeda highlighted the STOPP project’s efforts to enhance the quality of plastic recyclates by comparing home-separated and post-home-separated collection systems. In her words, the project underscores Plastic Recyclers Europe’s mission “by exploring, among others, a key challenge of plastics recycling: the interconnection between collection and quality. Through a study on how plastic packaging collection practices impact recyclate quality, STOPP aims to drive innovation in collection, sorting, and material science”.
She explains perfectly the aim of the project. “Our ultimate goal? To optimise recycling at every step, paving the way for a future where plastic is reused and repurposed effectively.” This is what STOPP is about (but not only, as the project covers other aspects such as consumer’s perspectives or reuse strategies): the project aims to optimise sorting and recycling practices, particularly for PP rigid plastics, through laboratory-scale experiments and quality assessments. STOPP seeks to improve recycling efficiency, ensure food-safe recyclates, comply with EU regulations, and contribute to a circular economy, aligning with broader sustainability goals.
